In the previous post, I discussed briefly why this blog is called "More Than Mulching," but in this post, I want to share some information about mulching that could be of value to you and your plants.
Mulch is more than just aesthetically pleasing. Sure, using it is a great way to delineate specific areas of your yard, and the rich color complements any plants and flowers you might have. As mulch is exposed to the elements, rain and sun cause it to break down. This decomposition is important because it replenishes nutrients in the soil, nutrients that have been depleted by plants, shrubs and trees. But mulch performs other functions, too.
While this unseasonable weather of late is quite pleasant, it still cools off considerably at night. A nice, thick mulch bed acts as a blanket insulating the roots and protecting the delicate root hairs from temperature extremes. The reverse of this process happens in the warmer summer months as the mulch keeps the sun and heat at bay. So keep the insulation factor in mind as the weather gets ready to turn colder. Think of it as tucking in a loved one.

Welcome!
I chose the title "More Than Mulching" for obvious reasons. Pete Rose, Inc. Landscape Products does so much more than mulch. We've been in business for more than 35 years and the company has grown from a solitary man selling topsoil from a truck into a business that, along with our sister company the Glen Allen Nursery, now encompasses more than five acres of landscape products.
The goal of this blog is to provide readers some answers to questions they might have about landscaping products, methods, and hopefully keep folks abreast of the current state of the industry. For instance, did you know that adding stone veneers on building fronts has a positive impact on heating and cooling the building? It's true. Stone holds heated and cooled air inside, while it repels heat and cold from the outside. And stone is a natural product. You simply cannot get more "green" than taking a natural product from the earth and "recycling" it to reduce energy consumption while beautifying structures.
